Too Trendy Home Miami Interior DesignPhoto Credit: Homebunch.com

is your home too trendy?

A fictitious friend of a friend of a friend of mine just built a home with all the bells and whistles. To protect the imaginary innocent, let's just call her....Okra.

Okra is installing beautiful gold hardware on her gray kitchen cabinets. Shiplap walls frame her bedroom and reclaimed wood accents and industrial lighting are prominently featured throughout.  Her furnishings are all on trend; a jewel-toned green, velvet sofa graces her living room while brass, decorative accents adorn her clear, lucite coffee table.  Overhead, the orb chandelier gently glistens as it illuminates the gallery wall behind her. Underfoot, is what appears to be a genuine antique, faded and well-worn kilim rug. A sheepskin throw lies across a blush colored pouf placed randomly - on purpose.  A Fiddle Leaf Fig respires dramatically in the distance...

trends aren't forever

(Or are they?)

It's hard to say. I am sure at one time, white kitchen cabinets and subway tile might have been considered trendy. Now, they are widely regarded as a classic element destined never to become dated or out of style. Debatable, but so far so good.

Remember Fuzzy carpet in the bathroom?  Yeah, this used to be a thing. Thank God it didn't stand the test of time because;

A. It's hideous

B. Ewwwwwwwwww

So how do you stay stylish and on trend without being too trendy? Let's take Okra's situation. Her house will probably be stunning for the first year or two. Maybe even five! But, eventually, (read soon) her home is going to scream 2017 and be the decorating equivalent of a fuzzy toilet seat.

It's OK to like trends - even LOVE them but not ALL of them at once.  Okra probably should have incorporated some proven classic pieces amidst her trendy finds. What's Okra going to do when Pantone's color of the year changes? I mean there's a reason it's a color of the year. The key is to CURATE your space. I may have mentioned this before ...

MIXING MODERN AND VINTAGE HOME DECOR

If you must, pick a couple of the pieces that you truly can't live without and let them play nicely with classic, (not necessarily traditional) pieces. Pick pieces that speak truth to your heart. Those are the pieces that, trends be damned, in ten years you will love them anyway!

If you still feel like you need to load up on your style all at once, or if you don't have existing pieces that are classic or proven decor stalwarts, open your mind to acquiring pre-owned pieces - maybe even from trends gone by, if that strikes your fancy.

This is a trend that speaks to me because it's hilarious! I wouldn't care if it ever became dated. But that's just me.

So anyhoo, too much of a good thing is none of a good thing. Stay ahead of the trends. Or behind. However you want to look at it. Be yourself. Choose things that you actually love not just because it's the "in" thing. Even if it's the fuzzy toilet seat. (But please, no).
