It's easy to set up a budget for your decorating or remodeling project. Not so easy to keep it. If you have champagne tastes on a beer budget I am here to tell you that you can hide the keg in plain sight and still have your space looking like a bottle of Dom Perignon.

I am getting really thirsty with these analogies so I will move along.

how to make your room look expensive for less

The trick is simple really and it can be scaled to any budget - high end or low. It's all relative. The main key thing to remember is to spend it where it counts. "But it counts everywhere!"

Yes. But there are layers...

Take this guest bathroom for example. The first thing your eye goes to is the mirror and the lighting. And guess what? There's some money there. The mirror isn't some shoddy, budget mirror. It's a solid wood, well made focal point. The lighting as well - not cheap, big box bathroom sconces. But.....the art, nothing special. The accessories? They won't break the bank either. The counters and cabinetry, nice enough, but not top of the line. The shower fixtures are pretty but not pricey (Moen 90 degree). The shower tile is from Porcelanosa. Kinda pricey - but then that's where your eye lands. Eventually.

Are you following? If you leverage your budget more towards the impactful items - the focal point areas - the entire space appears more expensive than it really is.

Another example: This master bedroom's focal point is hard to miss. (It's the wall, c'mon!) The wall behind the bed cost considerably more than any other individual element in the room. But it is a showstopper. No one really sees anything else. The other elements still compliment the room nicely. And, when put it all together - bam!

So see? Easy. Just figure out what the focal point (or points) of the room are (or what you want them to be)  and focus the higher percentage of your budget there. Don't skimp.

Once you have that covered, then you can start skimping a bit. I bet you no one will notice.
